Spring Art in (Random) Real Life

The other weekend, Amelia, Clara, Margaret and I provided music for our church’s ladies’ Spring salad luncheon. Let me tell you, it is a highlight of my life to play music with my kids. I mean, it thrills me each and every time. I never, ever tire of it. Playing music with our family satisfies my desire for artistic expression in a way that complements my drawing or embroidering or sewing or, even, baking.

So, after the (delicious) luncheon, we took a little stroll in the nearby garden. There is a memorial bench in the garden that my dad dedicated to his good friend with a special plaque recognizing their goofy interactions through the years. So, of course, we got Jemima to pose on it.

I miss Dad’s goofiness.

Aren’t the flowers amazing this year?

Jemima thinks so…she can’t take her eyes off of them!

One last photo before my favorite flowers fade into memories this year.

And to carry on the artsy Spring theme…

The Happy Day Project #6: Surprise Someone

Hehehe. I had fun with Alicia’s (over at La Famille) challenge this week. At first, I had so many surprises in mind for so many people that I had to narrow it down.

And Joey was the recipient of my surprise.

Because we are fledgling business owners, we have a very limited (aka as NO) eating-out budget. For date nights, we often make omelets or nachos. Or, if we are really going wild, we use some of the grocery budget to go to Subway. So, I decided to try to scrounge up some money to treat him to supper.

And this was the perfect week for the surprise because this week on date-night Friday we had had a big order at our fledgling business: cake for 400 people.

By the time we were finished frosting and decorating eight large cakes, I knew that Joey just wanted to step away from any more food preparation, so I sprang my surprise. I asked him what he wanted for supper and he said, “A big chicken fried steak.” I said, “Okay. Go order it.” He laughingly said, “Are you paying?” And I laughingly said, “Yep.”

That’s when I knew I had really surprised him. He mockingly staggered back, holding his heart. Hehehe.

IMG_0439

Doesn’t he look surprised?

IMG_0441

Hopefully, this meal won’t have him clutching his heart for real in the future.

We are obviously easily surprised–and amused. Now, I’m going to figure out how to execute some of my other surprises. Hehehe.

Art Night Eyes

Carla Sonheim had us drawing eyes from her Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun. Or, should I say, AN eye? We drew an eye using four different media: pencil, ink, charcoal and colored pencil. Now, I doodle eyes a lot, so I was looking forward to this exercise. I was surprised at how frustrated I was trying to get this eye to look “right.” Obviously, then, it was a useful exercise for me.

The Beginnings of My Font Appreciation

My mom unearthed this letter.

IMG_0405

I wrote this for Christmas, 1968–less than a month after I turned 7.

IMG_0406

I remember loving to form the letters according to their specific characteristics.

IMG_0407

I think I would consider my attraction to letters a life-long interest, wouldn’t you?

Lilac Love

Lilacs are my very favorite flower.

And I can’t recall their ever blooming this early.

Or this prolifically.
