A Wedding and a Hike

Labor Day weekend, most of us got into our various and sundry vehicles and headed west and north to the Black Hills where we got dressed up to attend…

Jenna and Graham’s wedding!

(Clara had the privilege of photographing the event!)

The next morning, Tim and I headed out for a much-anticipated hike to Harney Peak (while Joey and the rest of the crew made good use of the motel’s swimming pool). We saw this fella on the way there.

And these.

Now, I will say that Tim decided that we would hike to Harney Peak the masochistic more challenging way. This trail was through a wilderness area, so we had to register.

This was my view much of the time we were hiking.

Because Tim’s legs are longer than mine.

We did pause occasionally, however.

Two hours and forty-five minutes and 2225-ft.-higher-than-where-we-started later, we MADE IT.

A LOT of other people had made it to the top, too. Including a plethora of pre-school-aged kids. But, they had all come up the “easy” side. So it was slightly anti-climactic for Tim and me to arrive huffing and puffing and profusely sweating after conquering this fairly tough trail only to see lots of other not-so-sweaty folks sitting around with their picnics. Oh, well.

Then we started back down on the NOT easy trail…as indicated by this sign.

Tim-the-tree-hugger.

Tim said I would lose blog followers if I posted nature photos. Do I have blog followers?

IMG_1475

Oh, my goodness, I was happy to see this sign!

And five total hiking hours later, our dusty boots testified to our 10-mile hike!

On the way back to the motel, we saw this:

And Mt. Rushmore.

And, finally, with everyone on board, we headed home.

What a fun little Labor Day Weekend family trip!

So they have you register so they’ll know how many bodies to look for?
