State Fair Fun, Part 2

After the excitement of posing with Larry Gatlin, we wondered if the midway rides could measure up! I think they did. At least the reports from the participants seemed to indicate that they did. Those of us who had already been on the tram waited patiently.

While Levi and Eleanor went on this crazy Ring of Fire ride.

Despite the theatrical screaming coming out of Levi that almost had us literally ROFLOL, they survived.

Then Levi and Margaret went on this ride.

IMG_1405

They came out sweaty, but alive.

Next, it was time for the free hot dogs, compliments of the summer reading program (which also provided the gate tickets, thankyouverymuch)!

Finally, we went through the 4-H building and attempted to locate the kids’ 4-H projects. At least the photos were easy to find.

IMG_1411

(I dubbed this section the “Pinterest Area” of the building…what do you think?)

IMG_1415

We found Margaret’s watercolor, too.

IMG_1416

And Tim’s wildlife exhibits.

IMG_1417

Charlotte remembered making a beaded bracelet at one booth last year, so Edmund and I watched her bead for awhile.

IMG_1421

It was time to leave…but not before one last Tiger Show!

We bid farewell to the State Fair.

It really was a lot of fun!

State Fair Fun, Part 1

We experienced a first this year: we went to the State Fair without participating in some type of competition. While I enjoy supporting the kids as they show dogs or style clothing, I could definitely get used to this, too. We had so much fun!

We decided to cruise over to the Fair after Lydia participated in physical therapy in the morning, so we arrived at about 2 pm. Right as we pulled in, we heard the announcement that there were still wrist bands for the free afternoon concert! I did not even realize that there was an afternoon concert that day! I said, “Okay, girls, let’s go!”

IMG_1361

We got great seats to see…

IMG_1362

Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers!!

IMG_1364

It was a super-entertaining show with plenty of sing-a-long songs that took me right back to the Hall of Fame. All I needed were my boots and Joey. The show was so fun that I think we might have secured the next generation of Gatlin fans. (Although Charlotte was wondering why the “Lady was broken”…?)

IMG_1365

After all of that singing, the girls needed some ice cream.

IMG_1368

IMG_1371

Then we saw Nebraska’s Largest Steer.

IMG_1372

And sat on a hay bale couch.

IMG_1373

Each of the girls picked one “ride” that day. I got to go with Charlotte and Lydia on the new tram.

IMG_1375

IMG_1376

Clara, Levi, Margaret, Eleanor and Jemima helped us keep a perspective on how high we were going.

IMG_1377

IMG_1381

IMG_1382

As we got higher, Lydia and Charlotte were pretty excited!

IMG_1384

IMG_1385

The tram ride was one-way, so we started walking back toward the midway when we saw…

IMG_1391

IMG_1392

IMG_1393

Larry Gatlin–who graciously greeted us and posed for a photo!

IMG_1395

IMG_1396

IMG_1398

Is that fun, or what?

We eventually made it to the midway…stay tuned for more fun!

Wrapping Up 4-H (For Now, Anyway)

Some of what we saw in the 4-H Exhibit Halls this year (Warning: this post is extremely photo-laden, potentially rather boring and primarily for my own records, so view at your own discretion):

Even More Chickens And 4-H

This post is not about eating chicken, but showing chickens.

IMG_1258

IMG_1259

No, not plastic chickens. Feathered chickens. First, Tim and Eleanor participated in Sr. and Jr. Showmanship.

While their fan club watched.

The judge had a few things to say.

Chickens and the Fair BBQ

In addition to the Fair Parade, the Fair BBQ is a much-anticipated event. It sometimes involves waiting in line.

IMG_1260

And it always involves yummy sandwiches. Free yummy sandwiches.

IMG_1261

And yummy ice cream.

IMG_1262

And chips.

IMG_1263

And pickles.

IMG_1267

IMG_1268

(Harriet got all dressed up for the BBQ. It was tiring, so she took a little rest before she ate.)

IMG_1264

IMG_1265

And just like the Fair Parade, another Fair BBQ is now in the history books.

The Candy Parade

Since we don’t participate in Halloween trick-or-treating, the Fair Parade and its showers of candy are much-anticipated in our household. This is the annual opportunity for the kids to fill their bags with candy and carefully dole it out for days on end afterward. Oh, the excitement!

IMG_1212

Some kids are more excited than others.

In addition to showers of candy, there are occasionally showers of water. This also adds anticipatory excitement to the Fair Parade. Some kids are more excited about water showers than others.

One more exciting, candy-filled, showery Fair Parade is now in the history books!

4-H Dog Competition

Amidst engagements and graduations, 4-H season kept rolling right along. Eventually, it rolled right up to the 4-H Dog Show in which Eleanor and Maisy and Margaret and Cindy participated. First, Eleanor and Maisy competed in Obedience.

After which, my camera battery died! Yikes! Thankfully, Rachel took over capturing some of the finer moments of the show and then shared her battery with me at the end so I could show you some of the results:
